Barry got expelled from high school when he was sixteen years old and eventually found employment at a local metal recycling plant. For the last five-and-a-half years he has earned a reputation as a hard-working and reliable employee who rarely calls off work due to sickness.

Roughly three months ago he began dating a young woman named Carol. They seemed to hit it off right away and gave people the impression that they had a lot of good times with one another.

When Barry met Carol, he rarely drank. This situation totally changed when Carol and Barry began seeing each other on a regular basis. In reality, everything was going great until Carol without warning called Barry one night around 4 AM and told him that she had to stop dating him and that she couldn't tell him what was going on at that time.

The next morning before he went to work, Barry went to her apartment and found out right away that Carol had already moved out. Barry took this really hard. In truth, he was surprised because they seemed to be getting along so very well.

It didn't take very long for his pals at work and for his manager to notice that Barry was coming to work late at least twice per week and that he constantly called off ill. Barry's supervisor heard about all of this from Barry's co-workers and from Human Resources. So one Wednesday morning he asked Barry to come into his office. He stated to Barry that he had recently noticed an extreme change in his attendance, sick time, behavior, and in his work performance.

"Barry, I'm not an expert about alcohol facts and I am not particularly well-informed about alcoholism facts, but I have seen more than a few of my relatives and friends experience some really damaging difficulties because of their heavy and abusive drinking. Even though Barry didn't automatically feel any better or less depressed about the sorrow he still feels for Carol, he felt some reassurance knowing that his boss and his co-workers cared about him and wanted what's best for him. This gave him some psychological relief for the first time in a number of months and he honestly experienced some hope that he would get back on track with his life.
