Online Dyslexia Test -
Now what Is So Special About That?
There is an online dyslexia test that you can take online in about
half an hour. It is a well-designed test that has been tested, calibrated and found to be highly
accurate. It is the ONLY screening test for dyslexia that is endorsed by the Dyslexia
Institute.
O.K. That sounds great! But just what is
different, extradordinary about it?
Well, to begin with, it is something of a medical/health/dyslexic
breakthrough! Up until now the only dyslexia testing that was widely-available, depended on
questionaires. These asked questions about the subject's behavior and feelings. The answers might
provide indicators of possible symptoms of dyslexia.
Questionnaires leave a LOT to be desired. For example, when
someone answers the question, "Do you have trouble with reading?" by saying or checking "Yes",
what exactly does that mean?
Does s/he mean, "I have trouble with reading because I never have
enough time to read all the things I would like to."
Or even, "Yes, I have trouble with reading. I seem to be stuck at a
reading speed of 1,000 words a minute with 90% comprehension and cannot seem to break out above
that speed!"
With questionnaires you are dependent on the test-taker to give
accurate answers, and what is accurate is really determined by his or her perspective
and point of view.
So most questionnaire tests are at best only broad indicators and
are usually not very accurate.
The very best testing is done by the subject sitting down with a
trained, experienced expert for an hour or so, being asked questions and answering them. The
problem with this kind of test is:
1. That it is expensive (someone must pay for the trained
professional's time), and
2. You have to make an appointment, go to where there are trained
professionals available, and take the test at hours convenient to both the "Tester" and the
"testee".
An online dyslexia test, that is designed and tested by a team of
experts, is inherently cheaper and more convenient.
First off, you take the test whenever YOU want to; the Internet is
always there and available 24/7/365. And the experts who designed the test can be home sleeping;
they have done their work and don't have to be present. The computer program that you
interact with on the computer monitor screen can administer the test at any time, at very low cost
per test given. So the cost to take the test can be dramatically less!
Secondly, with an online dyslexia test you don't have to "Go"
anywhere special. You just need to get to a computer with an Internet connection. You can be in the
Australian Outback, at home in Cleveland on a Saturday night... anywhere, anytime! So you save the
travel costs, the scheduling hassles and waiting around to have your turn at being
tested.
Third, with an online dyslexia test, you are taking a test, the
parameters of which have all been carefully designed, measured, and then thoroughly tested. You get
the standard, best test there is. Your outcome does not depend on the relative expertise, mood or
alertness of the expert you happen to draw for your test, or whether s/he is having a good day or
not.
And so, as you can see, there are the advantages of cost, time,
convenience of when and where, and the uniformity of the test you take, all working for you! Now
doesn't all that make an online dyslexia test something pretty special?
Of course, there ARE limitations. The test is designed for adults
(16 or over) who speak and read English. And it does take about half an hour of your
time.
The makers of the test have this to say about it:
